Peak Inside A Lesson
Blueprint for our Sessions
Here's a brief snapshot of the outline I use to guide our time together!
Warm-Up: We often begin with a game or warm-up activity to activate your child's learning brain and get them ready to begin our session.
5 min.
3 Part Drill: The 3 Part Drill is a routine we use to practice letter id/sound id, segmenting (breaking apart sounds) and blending (putting together sounds).
*This is the most significant part of our lessons! Long term reading and spelling success is rooted in proficiency and mastery here.
*Automaticity and accuracy with sound id, blending, accuracy and fluency lies here!
Each week we add a new sound or two and progress in our sequence.
5 -10 min.
New Concept: A new concept is explicitly taught and practiced. We often complete a dictation page or word ladder to practice writing and reading at both the sound, word and sentence level with accuracy and fluency.
10 -15 min.
Integration Activity: This is often a writing or reading practice to engage the skills your child has just learned as well as practice previously taught concepts. Some weeks this includes oral reading practice - fluency pyramids, sentences strips, comprehension activities. Children bring back and forth a small brown book each week. We add fluency practice to build reading skills and confidence. Practicing this with your child each week is a great way to support their growth and progress.
10 -15 min.
Wrap-Up: When we accomplish everything we've planned, we try to make time for a game to complete our session and leave on a FUN note!
5 min.
Each week we practice explicitly taught skills and build within our Next Step sequence. The sequence I use at Next Step is based on most simple to most complex phonics skill as well as most frequently used spelling patterns, to most complicated. All instruction is rooted in the Science of Reading.
