1.
Consistency over time adds up & repetition is the key to success.
When building up a reading foundation, it’s going to take 2 main things. Consistency and repetition. And sometimes, as adults we find repetition to be boring. But to a child, who’s learning to read, repetition means predictability. And predictability creates safety and a willingness to take risks. When we create routines within reading lessons, it fosters a space for learning and growth.
2.
Big goals are possible.
When you commit to a big goal, like learning to read - it may feel overwhelming at first. The words on the page are SO BIG and there are so many of them! But when we break down sentences into words - and when we break down words into sounds - we make learning accessible, possible and sustainable.
It's gonna take work to make it happen - but it's possible!
3.
You're not in it alone!
I’ve spoken with a lot of parents lately who all reflect one a common quote from their child - “everyone else can read BUT me!!” And I have two things to say about that. First - everyone else may “look” like they are reading, but it’s not always true! Second - like learning to walk and learning to talk - learning to read takes time - and it happens at a different time for every child.
4.
Don't forget to celebrate!
Celebrate when your child reads to you! Celebrate when your child brings home a piece of writing! Hang it on the fridge. Acknowledge their hard work! This is their WORK! These are their milestones! How exciting!
Have a wonderful week!
